Background

We all hate being rejected right? So much so that we look to avoid experiencing the rejection, or any situation that may lead to it. In other articles we have looked at rejection and how to handle it, indeed how the fear is generally irrational.

We actively encourage all members of the Star Builder team to learn from all areas of life, indeed we encourage everyone to continue learning, but this time learn fun interesting and perhaps more importantly useful. One area I learnt a lot from was NLP, and here in the UK we have a great trainer by the name of Jamie Smart. This looks at one of his methods for challenging your self imposed sensibilities

The Self Imposed Constraints

Imagine if you will that society imposes constraints and norms on the way we live our lives, a set of accepted shared rules by which we should live our life. Those that challenge or don't abide by these rules are sometimes considered to be eccentric or odd by the rest of us.

The problem is that these rules can hold us back, and those rules may serve no real purpose, a line of accepted etiquette that really does not help you, nor does not complying with it really cause anyone any harm. These are learnt from a young age and conditioned in us, we learn from those around us, and this becomes "knowledge".

Impact Of These Constraints

These constraints prevent us from doing many things in life, for example the majority of us would never go into a supermarket and haggle over the price of a packet of crumpets. Though why not, sure you may not get the price you want, but nothing really went wrong by asking, nobody got hurt. Indeed the worst that could happen is that someone says no to you (generally not too rudely - as they are bound by their learned constraints), or you get your crumpets on the cheap!

Every day in every way you allow yourself to be held back from what you can truly achieve and what you truly deserve as a human being. This does not in any way mean you can go out and do things that are disrespectful or cruel to other people, you see that we here at Star Builder encourage people to be supportive of others and have their best interests at heart - just don't confuse this with holding yourself back unnecessarily.

In Network Marketing it is these constraints that prevent us from talking to certain prospective candidates, or talking to people that could potentially be great in this business. This not only does not help us, but it also does not help them either (if you truly believe in your products and your opportunity).

Freeing Yourself From Self Limiting Constraints

There are a number of ways of removing these self limiting constraints (such as the circle of excellence), but here is one that I love from a trainer that I love (well his manner, his work and his Britishness). Jamie Smart runs his own training company called Salad, so check him out, it will quite literally change your life.

If you could take a few simple steps to overcome these, would you be prepared to do it? Even if it made you squirm on the inside, well as Jamie describes in his video, by going somewhere and making absurd but harmless requests and challenging your constraints you will feel liberated. For example, if you were to stand in all seriousness in the line at a McDonalds and asked for a giraffe burger, the buzz you got from being able to ask freely is unbelievable.

You can check out his video on youtube here, we would have embeded it here, but the sharing restrictions prevented us from doing this. Still he is inspirational to me and a group of friends, it was still worth sharing (and no we don't get kick backs out of it). Remember that when you start out in network marketing, it is a continuing process of learning, and that learning comes from many areas, and one of great benefit to you would be learning how to get people to get the best out of them.
